Your Nervous System Isn’t Broken – It’s Alert

It can feel exhausting to constantly meet the needs of others. But your nervous system isn’t broken – it’s alert. People-pleasing is your system signalling: “Something is unsafe here – I’ll take action to protect you.”
The tricky part is that your nervous system learned this skill in contexts that may no longer exist. You may still overextend, worry, or hide your needs, even when there’s no real danger. That’s not failure – it’s your body keeping you safe.
The good news is that the nervous system is adaptable. Through awareness, grounding, and reflective practices, you can start to respond differently. You can notice the impulse to please, pause, check in with your needs, and act from choice rather than habit.
Reflection Prompt:
“Where did I act to protect myself rather than from desire?”
Mini Tool:
Leaves-on-a-stream visualisation: Imagine placing thoughts or worries on leaves floating down a gentle stream, letting them drift away. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yIlZHoiOb0s
Understanding your nervous system is just the beginning. More tools and reflections will soon be available in a dedicated support space for people who identify as people-pleasers – those who learnt to survive by being good – to slow down, notice, and practice choice safely. Let me know if you would like to be part of the early release.
